Avdou, a village of culture

Very near to Stalis (around 15 km) is the village of Avdou. The location of Avdou is spectacular but its location will be the subject of another post. Today I would like to describe our visit to Avdou yesterday on the occasion of a concert taking place there. 

The program of the event included workshops for making traditional items. After that we went for a short walk in the streets of Avdou and then we attended the concert. In the narrow traditional streets of Avdou we saw signs of shops indicating the professionals who were working in every spot for many years in the past. The signs also had dates. Many of these professions do not exist anymore in Crete and the signs in the streets of Avdou are having a historical-cultural role. 

One of the most amazing things in Avdou is that the people living there are in some aspects different from any other place in Crete, even from the neighbouring villages. Avdou has a long tradition of people of high culture: among them one finds high ranking diplomats and people of arts and letters. One may find farmers who are very well educated, calm and friendly in a very original and non touristic way.
